Hello and welcome to KTG Tours' newsletter!

Last month we took a look at Kim Il Sung Stadium, saw what it was like to be in a stadium with 40,000 cheering us before we ran the marathon and went over an epic World Cup qualifying football match we saw there between the DPRK and Japan.

Today we are going to see what it was like to see Leader Kim Jong Un at the May Day Stadium, packed with 150,000 people.



We'll also see what it is like to enter the largest stadium in the world and to have 90,000 people cheer you on before running the Pyongyang Marathon.

On 9 September 2018, on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the DPRK and after a 5 year hiatus, the Mass Games were held again. We were in Pyongyang that day. After various extremely strict security checks that lasted several hours, changing coaches a few times and being escorted by soldiers from the Korean People's Army, we arrived at the May Day Stadium, packed with 150,000 people plus all the performers.

Events & Guinness Book of Records


The Rungrado May Day Stadium holds several world records. Let's check them out!

Biggest Football Stadium in the World



The Guinness World Record for the biggest football stadium was awarded to the May Day stadium in March 2014. It has a seating capacity of 150,000! That's the size of two Anfield stadiums!

Largest Wrestling Attendance


On 29 April 1995 the May Day Stadium was awarded the Guinness World Record for having the highest attendance ever in a wrestling event. 190,000 people turned up!

Largest Gymnastic Display


109,000 performers participated in the Mass Games at the May Day Stadium on 14 August 2007, making it the largest gymnastic display in history. The Mass Games were awarded the largest gymnastic display Guinness World record for this.

Design


The May Day Stadium looks like an open parachute. Its design is based on a blossoming magnolia, the national flower of the DPRK.

History


The May Day Stadium was inaugurated when the DPRK hosted the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in July 1989. This event drew almost 22,000 international students from 177 nations.

It was the largest World Festival of Youth and Students ever conducted at the time, and it was only surpassed in 2017 by the event in Sochi, Russia.



Other construction projects for the 1989 event include the famous Ryugyong Hotel and the sports villa where you can find several indoor and outdoor stadiums and the Youth Hotel and the Sosan Hotel.

The May Day Stadium underwent renovation from 2014 and was re-opened in 2016.
